Process Post 5- Mini Assignments, Peer Review and Accessibility

I particularly enjoyed this week’s reading, named “Digital Gardens” as it relates to what we are doing as a class. This blog talks about how people are making their own, personalized websites to post their content and all of it is under the same Internet. Even though it is gaining popularity now, it dates back to 1998 Mark Bernstein introduced the idea of the “hypertext garden,” arguing for spaces on the internet that let a person wade into the unknown. “Gardens … lie between farmland and wilderness,” he wrote.

Philosophical readings aside, I added yet another accessibility tool to my website, A TRANSLATOR! This is pretty cool. This idea came to me during tutorial when I overheard students talking in different mother tongues, and I thought to myself, “it would be sweet if they went to my website and could read posts in their own language.” This would promote inclusivity and add a personal touch to the website. This feature makes my website accessible to more people from different parts of the world.

This tool is on the upper right portion of my website so it does not feel cluttered, nor does it block any content.

We have been working on our mini-assignments and the third one is due soon. I have a few ideas for it, so stay tuned! Our first peer review was due this week, so you can check it out here. I reviewed The Weekly Grain of Malt by Stephanie Malt.

For this peer review, I will be reviewing Stephanie’s website. I have been visiting this website for a week and I see that it is frequently updated, follows a consistent theme in all the posts and I really enjoyed the content I see on there. On the About page, Stephanie explains the meaning of the website’s name and I liked the puns she made of her last name. This page is concise and clear and gives us the perfect introduction we need to herself and the website. This website is about her daily life where she has podcasts, SMISKI stories and unboxings, game reviews, and much more.

Menus

As the requirements wanted, the website has easy-to-navigate POSIEL/PUB 101 menus in the header. There are proper subheadings for all assignments and all links work as illustrated. I found her website very easy to use and all the posts and assignments were easy to navigate.

Content and Process Posts

Posts on this website were informally written, which makes it engaging and easy to follow. Stephanie used a combination of written posts, images and podcasts as her weekly content posts, which I found to be very cool. There were times I found that there could be a better use of grammar, but this could also be a personal choice in order to make the posts set their informal tone. I listened to her 35-minute podcast and I found it to be very well done. The teacher had told us that podcasts/video making as content posts should be done only if we have a history of making them, and I feel Stephanie has successfully proven to deliver a well-finished product.

The dates on the process and content posts show that they were worked upon and published in groups on the same day. Even though this is not a problem, WordPress offers an option to change the date of publishing, so my suggestion would be that Stephanie changes the dates in order to show these posts were published on different weekly dates.

The content posts are well-written and engaging, and the only suggestion I have is to probably tag them as “content” posts rather than blogs.

(PS- This is a personal suggestion and I would check with the TA or teacher if tagging “content posts” as “blogs” is also acceptable)

Design

I like the overall design of the page and there is a simplistic yet consistent theme throughout. The landing page of the website shows all the posts with their respective featured images and a little excerpt of the post. This layout increases the accessibility of the website and gives the user a snippet of each post which they can continue reading upon clicking on the post. The website is also very accessible on phone and no feature is left behind even when viewing on a smaller screen.

Overall, I find the blog very interesting and interactive. Both the theme and content with the course, and adding the Spotify widgets add look as well as interactivity. I will definitely return to this website and am looking forward to seeing what Stephanie does with it. Good luck.

Process Post 4- Audience, Accessibility and Adventure

What audience have you been imagining thus far? How has that imagined audience informed your design and editorial decisions?

The first reading this week from Michael Warner, titled. “Publics and Counterpublics”, talked about what the word “public” means, how it has different meanings and how it can be further interpreted by different people. The idea of a public is a cultural form, a kind of practical fiction, present in the modern world in a way that is very different from other or earlier societies. Like the idea of rights, or nations, or markets, it can now seem universal.

The next reading from Forbes was about how our undigitized past may be getting lost as people are always just online and think all their answers can be found just from a click of a button. It talks about museums, and written books that have not yet been digitalized due to copyrights or some reason. The writer says that a lot of information is being lost, especially from the 20th century as people don’t go out and seek information.

Moving on to my journey with website building, we talked about the target audience in class and who my posts are solely meant for/ who they indirectly target. With the world being exposed to new technology and devices every day, I would say that my phone blogs are meant for people who are looking to buy a new phone, who are keen on knowing the new devices in the market and people who share the same passion as me.

Continuing with my exploration of website building, our discussions in class extended to the crucial aspect of accessibility. It became apparent that ensuring that my website is user-friendly and accessible to all individuals, regardless of their abilities, is paramount. This involves implementing features like alt text for images and providing text-to-speech options for those with visual impairments.

For accessibility reasons, I have added quick links to the sidebar of my website and also an accessibility widget (shown in the screenshot below).

Now, diving into the world of adventure in website design, I realized that creating an engaging and visually stimulating platform can be just as important as the content itself. This adventure involves experimenting with various design elements, colour schemes, and interactive features to captivate and retain the attention of my target audience.

In my journey of website building, I aim to strike a balance between catering to the specific needs and interests of my target audience, ensuring accessibility for all, and embarking on the adventure of design creativity to make my website stand out in the ever-evolving digital landscape.

Mini Assignment #2

My personal hero right now- Miles Morales

I have watched two of the Spiderverse movies this month and I have been a fan of them since. I spent hours on websites that talked in-depth about the movie and watched videos that dissect each important part and go further than what is shown in the movies. I have always been a Spiderman fan and Miles is currently my personal hero from the Marvel Universe. This is because he is around my age, attending university while also being a superhero and someone who has everyday struggles as well. I look up to him as university for me is challenging enough that I have reduced my co-curricular, but he is out there (fictionally) being a superhero full-time as well. This gives me the motivation to manage my time better and spend time building a skill, volunteering and being active.

As Miles said, “Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Sorry, I’m doing my own thing.” That’s what I’m doing for the rest of the year!

Process Post 3…

So the story of my website building continues. I have had a steady momentum making my website and there are lots of new features that I came across. I have made a list of all these and hope to add them over the next few weeks. I have been making drafts and seeing previews of how components look (placement).

This is a good week to talk about this as we discussed this in class and our readings related to placement and design as well. In this week’s reading, I learned about the three affordances of social media – “anonymity, persistence, and visibility”. This reading was rather interesting to me as a young adult as I progress and dive deeper into creating a good, honest and professional online presence (for job search and digital footprint).

Two things that stood out to me from these readings:

1. Social media provide increased opportunities and challenges to manage self-presentation.
2. Self-presentation is moderated by the technological and social affordances of social media platforms, such as anonymity, persistence, and visibility. And, social media users respond to content provided by others in an effort to manage their online image

So far, I have made menus and submenus for POSIEL and for my phone blogs. The home page of my website (landing page) is where users can see the latest posts and they also have a shuffle option which displays a random post from my site.

UH OH. The one problem that has been prevalent is the placement of my featured image. I have spoken to our TA about it as well. The featured image is supposed to be a thumbnail for the post and shouldn’t then be viewed in the body of my post, but the theme I chose displays it as a featured image as well as a body image for the post. This is the one drawback I have noticed in this theme. I have accepted this and now made better-looking featured images that I am ready to live with even if they are part of my blog’s body. In hopes of countering this, I am going to reach out to the creator of the theme and see if they can fix this (even in the theme’s free version).

A MEME

This meme accurately describes the situation of me and many of my peers. I overheard a few people talking about how they suddenly lost their momentum of keeping up with two weekly posts. I could relate and found myself in the same boat as them as this semester’s workload just doubled out of nowhere. Where did 2 midterms, 1 project, weekly posts and three canvas quizzes suddenly come from? I had a good track record of doing all my posts on time but I think I missed one week of posts as there was no class and I just worked on my website instead of writing posts. I have caught up on my posts now and just have one content and one process post left for this week which I plan to do soon.

I think this mountain of work piling on was a wake-up call for me to not snooze and keep on grinding. The silver lining is that I did not get too behind on my posts and am still able to produce quality posts in time before the peer review and marking by the TA.

I am excited to write two of my posts soon after I do the readings as I really enjoy the area of publishing and website design in general.

Welcome to my Process Post 2!

This post goes over the installation and setup work I did up to this week. This includes the decision I had to make, my rationales, and what’s next on my mind. In Week 2, I chose a techy theme that promised features I was looking forward to using when I saw them. After working with that theme for two days, I realized that most of the features I liked were paid and the free version could only let the user do so much. I spent the next three days trying different themes and then decided to stick with my current theme, Flash News. This was one of the most important decisions to make as the work I do hereon, is based on the tools I can use from this theme.

The reasons I chose this theme can be better explained from the following screenshot from their website.

I have boxed in red the features that attracted me to this theme- the advertising header in case I decide to monetize my website, the shuffle post button that displays a post at random, the “breaking news” and “posts list” section that updates itself when a new post is made. There are features on top of those as mentioned above that led me to choose this theme. 

This is how my website looks as of now. I have added 2 content posts and 2 process posts, added in the header an about me page, a drop-down menu for POSIEL 101, and a menu for some phones I want to write about.

2 Weeks Earlier…

This website is registered through Reclaim Hosting and is working on WordPress. This was quite a straightforward procedure where we chose a plan, then a domain, paid the money for registration and then installed WordPress. I used the following YouTube video for a step-by-step tutorial about the plans and the process.

How does what I have created so far relate to the vision board I made last week?

The vision board I had last week was me visual dumping all the ideas that came to my mind about the vision of my website. From what I had last week, I have found value, prupose, audience and accessibility to my website. I will continue to work on these and add more features and content in the following weeks.
